In November 2013, Lisbon was named one of the ten best cities in the world for coffee—a place where “people get seriously poetic about coffee.” We agree—and offer one of our most popular pre-trip posts, this short video guide to the many different ways to order coffee in Lisbon. It was filmed in the Café Martinho da Arcada, at Fernando Pessoa’s favorite table, which is still kept just the way he liked it.

Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Miradouro de Santa Catarina is a wonderful place to enjoy a view of the city from a garden where the youth hang around the statue of Adamastor, the mythical sea monster from the national epic poem “Os Lusíadas” (The Lusiads) by Luís Vaz de Camões, Portugal’s Shakespeare. There’s a great café called Noobai where you can have a galão (a popular Portuguese coffee made with espresso and foamed milk and served in a tall glass) and take in the view
