Ana Margarida de Carvalho was born in Lisbon, where she graduated in law and worked as a journalist for 25 years. Her first novel Que Importa a Fúria do Mar (Teorema) was praised by critics, shortlisted for a number of prizes and awarded the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela APE/DGLAB in 2013. Her second novel, Não Se Pode Morar nos Olhos de um Gato (Teorema) was nominated as book of the year by the SPA (Portuguese Society of Authors), shortlisted for the Prémio Oceanos, awarded the Prémio Literário Manuel de Boaventura and, again, the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela APE/DGLAB in 2016, making her one of the few authors to be twice distinguished with this award. Pequenos Delírios Domésticos (short stories, Relógio d’Água, 2017) received the Prémio de Conto Camilo Castelo Branco / APE. O Gesto Que Fazemos Para Proteger a Cabeça (Relógio d’Água, 2019) is her latest novel, shortlisted for national and international prices. Cartografias de Lugares Mal Situados (Relógio d’Água, 2021) compiles ten shorts stories about war. She was also the mentor of the project Escape Goat that brought together 46 Portuguese writers, 46 visual artists, and many translators in English, Italian, German, French, Dutch and Spanish to create a bilingual serial novel during the Covid-19 pandemic (Relógio d’Água 2020).   Photo copyright Alfredo Cunha
