Rui Vieira Nery was born in Lisbon in 1957. He holds a Licentiateship in History from the University of Lisbon (1980) and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Texas at Austin (1990), which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar and a grantee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He teaches at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and is a senior researcher at the Ethnomusicology Institute – Centre for Music and Dance Studies and of the Centre for Theatre Studies. As a musicologist and cultural historian he published numerous studies on Portuguese and Brazilian music history and is a frequent guest lecturer at many of the most distinguished academic and cultural institutions in Europe, Brazil and the United States. A former Secretary of State for Culture in the Portuguese government and director for Culture at the Gulbenkian Foundation, he is a member of the Portuguese Academies of Sciences, History, Fine Arts and Navy, and in 2018 was awarded the University of Coimbra Prize.
